Adding chart items to i2 Maps

Adding chart items to the map in i2 Maps creates a different representation of the location data in the records those items contain. Doing so can help you to understand the relationships between different entities and events, and to reveal patterns that were not obvious from the chart alone.

Adding to the map

By default, when a record in a chart item contains geospatial properties, Analyst's Notebook adds a marker to the map in i2 Maps automatically. If a record has multiple geospatial properties, the map displays a marker for each property.

To change the default behavior:

  1. Click Settings in the i2 Maps window to display the Map settings dialog.

  2. On the General tab, set Add records automatically to Off.

When the automatic setting is off, you can add markers to the map manually by right-clicking a chart item and selecting Add to map. Analyst's Notebook then adds all selected records that have geospatial properties to the map.

Note: The automatic setting does not apply retroactively. If you add geospatial properties to records while the setting is off, those records are not added to the map when you turn the setting back on. However, the setting does apply even when the i2 Maps window is not open.

Removing from the map

The markers for all the chart items that you add to the map exist in a layer in the i2 Maps window. To hide all the markers on the map, click the Layers button to display its menu, and then click Hide layer.

Alternatively, to remove all the markers from the map, click Remove record markers instead.

To remove an individual marker from the map, right-click that marker and then click Remove.

Printing the map

To print the map in i2 Maps, click the Print button in the upper-left corner of the window to open the Print dialog.

Important: For best results, ensure that the Background graphics option is selected. This option is usually in the More settings or Advanced settings section of the dialog.

The map is printed as exactly it appears in the i2 Maps window, including all markers. To print the map without markers, you must hide or remove them first.

Other map settings

i2 Maps uses clustering to make the map easier to read. When markers are close together, they appear as a single marker that displays the number of markers it represents.

Zooming into the map causes clustered markers to separate into individual markers. You can also prevent clustering by turning it off:

  1. Click Settings in the i2 Maps window to display the Map settings dialog.

  2. On the General tab, set Use marker clusters to Off.

Note: Both settings on the General tab apply only to the current chart, and Analyst's Notebook saves them with the chart. Any other open charts have their own settings.
