Setting display icons and symbols

You can change the display icon for entities selected on the chart. The display icon applies to entities that are represented as icons, event frames, and theme lines. You can also change the symbols assigned to attribute classes.

About this task

There are a number of ways to access the Choose an Icon dialog in Analyst's Notebook, including editing item and chart properties, and through the Conditional Formatting rule editor. The simplest way to open the Choose an Icon dialog is to select an entity on the chart, select the Style tab, and choose Set Display Icon from the ribbon. The default is set to show All available icons, alphabetically, from all categories.

You can choose to display a symbol next to an attribute class, on the charting surface. For example, your Date of Birth attribute defaults to a blank circle symbol, and you would like to change it to a green square. You can access Chart Properties from the File menu, or right-click on the chart surface, and select Edit Chart Properties. When you click ... next to a symbol in the Attribute Classes list, the Choose a Symbol dialog opens. The default is set to show All available symbols, alphabetically, from all categories.

Procedure

To set the display icon:

  1. Find the display icon that you want to change your selection to. You can scroll through all the available icons, choose a category from the options in the side menu, or enter text into the search box. The search criteria covers categories, and synonyms. The search text is matched against given icon names and synonyms.

    • Analyst's Notebook contains a number of predefined categories, for example People, Objects, and Locations. When you select a category, all members of the category are displayed.

    • The Custom category displays icons from the custom icons folder. When you make changes to custom icons, the changes are reflected in the Custom category. Similarly, you can drag and drop image files into the Custom category, and they are added to the custom icons folder.

  2. Click the chosen icon. Your selected items are immediately updated with the new icon, and the Set Display Icon dialog closes.

To set the symbol for an attribute class:

  1. Navigate to the Attribute Classes option, find the name of the attribute, and click ... to open the dialog. As with icons, you can scroll through all the symbols, choose a category, or enter text into the search box. Again, there are predefined symbols, and custom symbols. The behavior is the same as for icons.

  2. Select a new symbol. The symbol changes in the Symbol list.

  3. Click OK to change to the new symbol, or Cancel to return to the chart without making any changes.
